Local Wildlife

March 2005

An opossum that has been visiting with us recently. This animal is normally nocturnal. It may be that the unusually cold, snowy winter this year has forced it to forage during daylight hours. It seems to like birdseed. The thing behind the opossum is a platform bird feeder. The screen was torn up by deer stepping on the feeder. The others made using perforated aluminum sheet fared much better.

June 2005

My neighbor's young son found this blue frog in the detention basin up the street. I haven't yet looked it up to see what type of frog it is.

August 2005

Tina has two "HummZinger" hummingbird feeders up on the back deck. They're a big hit with the ruby-throated hummingbirds around here. Watching them has become a pastime in itself. They are really very fascinating little birds. Unfortunately, they are also very skittish. I'm trying to get a better photo. If I do, I'll replace this one, which is just a bit out of focus.
